sunday-storm asked: Hi, I was just looking at the list with book you've read in 2011 (I made it to 50 too!) and I saw that 'Life of Pi' was on it. Recently I had to read that book for school, and I really hated it. So i was curious about your opinion.

November 11th is Veterans Day and Remembrance Day During the past two years, the US military has lost more men and women to suicide than it has to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. [Congress.org]

VietDon: Who won the war? →
My thoughts exactly…(although in my Canadian’s words) vietdon: In the United States they call it “The Vietnam War”, here in Vietnam, they call it “The American War”. Who won this war (if you want to be technical though it wasn’t actually a war for the United States because of a technicality with Congress)? There are still many Americans that think they won…

Sometimes I’m driving around Hanoi, noticing all the things I love about VietNam and I really wish my parents, sister and best friends could come see all this country has to offer.

Pho For The President
When I went to Saigon a few weeks ago (more to come on this trip later), I went to this Pho restaurant. Bill Clinton visited Vietnam awhile ago and ate here, giving the restaurant their fantastic tagline. The pho itself wasn’t the best I’ve ever had…you’d think that someone would have taken him to a proper street stall with GOOD pho, but I did get a kick out of the...

Body Language in Vietnam
My Canadian is incredibly good at noticing little things about people’s behaviors. Two things he’s pointed out to me are particularly interesting: 1) When shaking hands with someone, Vietnamese people often place one hand on the inside of their elbow as a sign of respect 2) When handing money to each other, the Vietnamese use two hands, not one.

Lack of recent updates...
About 3 weeks ago, I started teaching full time preschool and, as you might guess…I have been thoroughly exhausted. I am teaching an “international” class of 10 two to three year olds and it’s a lot of fun but a HUGE challenge. Not one kid’s first language is English, making communication fairly difficult. The languages in my classroom include: Vietnamese (3 boys...
